I love sitting down and chatting with friends. It is literally my favorite thing to do. Sure, I like hiking and doing yoga, but it doesn’t compare to sitting down with a true friend and talking about real stuff. If you are like me, you may have found most of the time these conversations are over alcohol.friends. It is literally my favorite thing to do. High Tea creates an alternative to happy hour allowing you and your friends to get together over something minimal and nutritious. Besides, who doesn’t want to cozy up with a cup of tea? After all, tea is a hug in a cup.
Are you wondering what high tea is? Well, you probably aren’t alone as it is a British thing, not American. High tea is a small meal eaten in late afternoon or early evening accompanied by tea. Usually, this means a scone, finger sandwich, and tea. There is also afternoon tea, which is typically not had seated at a table but in low comfortable chairs.
House of Commons is a wonderful place to have tea that doesn’t break the bank. While Brown Palace is also a wonderful place to have tea, it is more expensive. Needless to say, I was delighted to find a more economic alternative that stands up to the Brown Palace.
When I went, I got a delicious blueberry scone accompanying my Earl Grey de le Creme tea. I added sugar and milk to my tea, as I like it, and Devonshire cream to my scone. If you haven’t experienced Devonshire cream on a scone before-get on it! It is heavy whipping cream that is baked on low for about half a day and comes out a creamy butter. With a little jam, it’s to die for!
At the time, I was planning my sister’s baby shower, which I themed “tea party”. (I told you, I really like tea!) I was surprised to find their loose leaf teas were about $3 for 2 oz. Of course, I ended up going home with 2 oz. of several varieties: ginger peach, lavender earl gray, earl gray de le creme, white coconut, Moroccan mint, masala chia, etc. Tip: mint tea with honey and milk is a delicious substitute for dessert!
The House of Common’s location is in LoHi (Lower Highlands), which is always a fun neighborhood for an outing. They are also open during a variety of hours, including late morning and Sundays. After all, we aren’t British and can have our tea parties when we want! 🙂
P.S. If you don’t want to skip the alcohol, they do, as most high tea does, offer champagne.
